1.  Wednesday, May 30     Savannah
Your Carew Travel tour director meets you at LaGuardia airport for the morning Delta Airlines flight to Savannah, a city, steeped in history and rich in old-fashioned Southern charm. After lunch explore the city from its early colonial days through the Civil War era to the present day.  Spend two nights at the elegant Mulberry Inn, which always receives good reviews from our travelers.   This intimate hotel in the heart of the historic area has a café, pleasant garden courtyard, and a pool.  Tonight enjoy a welcome dinner at the restored waterfront.  http://www.savannahhotel.com/ (L/D)

2.  Thursday, May 31     Savannah
On a walking tour the heyday of Savannah's golden age comes to life as you stroll through the historic squares that date back to the 1700's.  Tour the Owens-Thomas House, an outstanding example of English Regency architecture with a fine decorative arts collection.  Inspired by classical antiquity, this style of architecture takes its name from England’s King George IV, who ruled as Prince Regent from 1811 to 1820. The house was designed by a young English architect, one of the first professionally-trained architects practicing in the United States. The elegant residence was built for a prominent cotton merchant and banker.  The remainder of the day is free. You will have passes to hop on and off the trolley, which makes stops throughout the city at places of historic interest and shops.  (B)

3.  Friday, June 1     Beaufort and Charleston
En route to Charleston, tour Beaufort, the “Queen of the Carolina Sea Islands,” which enjoyed great prosperity in the 18th century as the nearby cotton and rice plantations thrived.  After lunch, continue to Charleston and check into the Marriott Courtyard Historic District, another traveler favorite, which recently received a multi-million dollar renovation. The hotel, rated as a “hidden gem” by Trip Advisor, has a pool and restaurant. www.charlestonhotel.com   After dinner you have orchestra seats for our first Spoleto Festival event, Animals and Children, performed by Theater Company 1927. Seamlessly synchronizing original live music, physical performance, a darkly humorous narrative, and striking video animation, Animals and Children is a visually stunning tale of intrigue and paranoia from this acclaimed theater company. Animals and Children played at the National Theatre in London. Michael Billington wrote in The Guardian, “The 70-minute show makes its points with visual and verbal humour … brilliant animations … Performed by a quick-changing, white-faced female trio, the show feels like a heady mix of Berlin cabaret, silent movie and social commentary … astonishing company….”  (B/D/L)

4.  Saturday, June 2     Charleston
On a city tour, experience the finest that Charleston has to offer: the French Quarter, the Rainbow Row of incredible homes in pastel colors, the Market, the Cathedral and historic synagogue, and the Old Citadel. Stop at the famed Battery overlooking Fort Sumter (where the first shot of the Civil War was fired.)

The afternoon is free for personal pursuits. Choices are varied and our tour director will help you find an activity.  Why not take a boat tour to historic Fort Sumter? After dinner, you have orchestra seats for Noel Coward’s celebrated comedy, Hay Fever. Always a Festival favorite, Dublin’s inimitable Gate Theatre offers this delicious send-up of bohemian eccentrics that has been called “one of the most perfectly engineered comedies of the century” by The Times (London). Meet the Blisses: Judith, the aging star actress mother; David, the self-absorbed novelist father; and their two adult children, Simon and Sorel. When each family member invites a guest to the country home for the weekend, the clan’s outrageous antics alternately infuriate and astound their hapless visitors. Director Patrick Mason makes this witty and stylish farce the perfect light entertainment for a springtime evening at the Spoleto Festival.   (B/D)

5.  Sunday, June 3     Charleston
Check out of the hotel and visit the Middleton Place. This National Historic Landmark is home to America’s Oldest Landscaped Gardens. Built in 1755, the House Museum interprets four generations of Middleton Family, with extraordinary family furniture, silver, porcelain, rare books and portraits on display. Birthplace of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Middleton Place and the Middletons have played an important role in American history. The property has miraculously remained under the same family stewardship for some 320 years, and today successfully preserves history for visitors to enjoy.  After lunch, continue to the Charleston airport for Delta flight to LaGuardia, arriving at 8pm.  (B/L)
