Our expert and popular guide, Karen Goodman, is on site throughout the tour, overseeing the five day program. Orchestra seats await you for two productions at Charleston’s acclaimed Spoleto Festival USA. You experience the old south on a plantation tour, and museum tours, sample the local cuisine and glimpse the rich history strolling through these beautifully  preserved towns.  Early reservations are essential as previous tours have sold out quickly. For over twenty years Carew Travel has partnered with the Theatre Development Fund and this tour contains all the features of our successful Spoleto tour collaborations.  Deposits due April 1.

1.  Wednesday, June 2     Savannah
Carew Travel tour director, Karen Goodman, meets you at LaGuardia for the morning US Airways flight to Savannah, a city, steeped in history and rich in old-fashioned Southern charm. After lunch explore the city from its early colonial days through the Civil War era to the present day.  Spend two nights at the elegant Mulberry Inn, which always receives good reviews from our travelers.   This intimate hotel in the heart of the historic area has a café, pleasant garden courtyard, and a pool.  Tonight enjoy a welcome dinner at the restored waterfront.  http://www.savannahhotel.com/ (L/D)

2.  Thursday, June 3     Savannah
On a walking tour the heyday of Savannah's golden age comes to life as you stroll through the historic squares  that date back to the 1700's.  Tour the Owens-Thomas House, an outstanding example of English Regency architecture with a fine decorative arts collection.  The remainder of the day is free.  Our tour director will provide suggestions.  You can cruise the Savannah River, visit other fine museums or browse through the shops.  (B)

3.  Friday, June 4     Beaufort and Charleston
Enroute to Charleston, tour Beaufort, the “Queen of the Carolina Sea Islands”, which enjoyed great prosperity in the 18th century as the nearby cotton and rice plantations thrived.  After lunch in town, continue to Charleston and check in to the Holiday Inn Historic District, another traveler favorite. The hotel, rated as a “hidden gem” by Trip Advisor, has a pool, and restaurant. www.charlestonhotel.com
After dinner you have orchestra seats at the  Spoleto Festival, featuring Dublin’s renowned Gate Theatre in an effervescent production of Noël Coward’s brilliant comedy of manners Present Laughter.  Elegantly staged and luxuriously costumed, Present Laughter is a delight of barbed witticisms, ironic comedy, and, upon occasion, chaotic farce. (B/D/L)

4.  Saturday, June 5     Charleston
On a city tour experience the finest that Charleston has to offer: the French Quarter, the Rainbow Row of incredible homes in pastel colors, the Market, the Cathedral and historic synagogue, and the Old Citadel. Stop at the famed Battery overlooking Fort Sumter (where the first shot of the Civil War was fired).

The afternoon is free for personal pursuits. Choices are varied- and our tour director will help you find an activity.  Why not take a boat tour to historic Fort Sumter? After dinner, you have  orchestra seats for  the first opera ever performed in the American colonies. FLORA, AN OPERA. This delightful production of a ballad opera with lyrics written to the accompaniment of popular tunes of the time will thoroughly illuminate just why this was a theatrical staple throughout the 18th century.  (B/D)

5.  Sunday, June 6     Charleston
Check out of the hotel and visit the Charleston Museum, the oldest museum in the United States, to see historic clothing, furniture, silver, vehicles, and other objects.  In the afternoon visit Magnolia Plantation, built prior to the Revolutionary War, for a glimpse of plantation life in the 19th century and beyond.  Continue to the Charleston airport for US Airways flight to LaGuardia.  (B)
