The superb quality of Canadian theatre is on display with four enduring and endearing plays, two productions at the Shaw Festival in the storybook village of Niagara-on-the-Lake and two more productions at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in lovely Stratford.

Our eleventh Canadian Theatre tour is, as always, a theatre lover’s dream.   With two of North America’s first-tier repertory theatres performing in close proximity, Ontario has become a place of yearly pilgrimage for discerning audiences.   In Niagara-on-the-Lake we spend two nights at a deluxe resort, and we stay in the heart of Stratford for two nights. We have a balance of free time and planned activities. As we arrive and depart via the Buffalo airport, we have the opportunity to visit the acclaimed Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
This trip was originated with the Theatre Development Fund, a travel partner with Carew Travel for over 20 years.

1.  Wednesday, October 6
Depart from LaGuardia on a morning nonstop flight to Buffalo. Your tour director, Karen Goodman,  meets you at LaGuardia and expertly oversees the tour. Travel directly, via private motor coach, to the storybook village of Niagara-on-the-Lake, a beautiful town full of lush parks and gardens and some of Canada’s finest Victorian architecture. Niagara-on-the-Lake recently won an award as the “Prettiest Town in Canada.” Enjoy lunch before you check into the lovely Pillar and Post, Ontario’s only five star country inn, ideally located in the center of town. Meet your fellow travelers at  a welcome dinner before the evening performance of Mary Chase’s delightful Harvey. Everyone wants to meet Elwood Dowd and his friend Harvey. When they enter a room, strangers soon become friends and people want to share a drink with them. But Harvey is a six-foot invisible rabbit and Elwood’s sister wants him gone. The question is – does the world need another "normal" chap, or more Harveys? A new look at this Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Mary Chase, made famous by Jimmy Stewart’s portrayal of the loveable Elwood Dowd in the 1950 film. You have orchestra seats for the performance. (L/D)

2.  Thursday, October 7
In the morning you have a backstage tour of the Festival Theatre followed by lunch.  In the afternoon you have orchestra seats for the  matinee of George Bernard Shaw’s  Doctor’s Dilemma. A doctor who has discovered a lifesaving cure must make an impossible decision. Who should he treat: a kindly colleague who serves the poor, or an extremely talented but unscrupulous young artist, who also happens to have a beautiful young wife? When there’s only room for one more, who can he afford to save? The Doctor’s Dilemma is Bernard Shaw’s comic exploration of the medical establishment and the value of art.  The evening is free.  There are many choices for dining in this small town. (B/L)

3.  Friday, October 8
In the morning check out of the hotel and drive by private motor coach to the lively town of Stratford.  After lunch check into the beautiful Arden Park Hotel, in the center of town.  The hotel’s facilities include an indoor pool, hot tub, and restau¬rant. Tonight,  see a performance at the Festival Theatre.  The grounds surrounding the Festival Theater include an art gallery and flower gardens, as well as a beautiful lake, which is surrounded by walking paths. You have orchestra tickets for an evening Dangerous Liaisons by Christopher Hampton. In pre-Revolutionary France, the Marquise de Merteuil and her sometime lover the Vicomte de Valmont amuse themselves by plotting the seduction of two women of virtue: the virginal Cécile Volanges and the respectably married Mme de Tourvel. But as their cynical game proceeds, the players’ motives grow deeper – and more deadly.  (B/(L)

4.  Saturday, October 9
In the morning tour the Festival’s Costume Warehouse, where you’ll marvel at the talent of the Festival’s world-class designers, scenic and wardrobe staff, and prop makers.  After lunch you have orchestra seats for a matinee performance of  Kiss Me Kate, with music and lyrics by Cole Porter.   As backstage bickering between the co-stars of a musical version of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew threatens to sabotage opening night, along come a couple of gangsters with a gambling debt to collect. The result is hilarity on and off the stage – all punctuated by Cole Porter’s unforgettable melodies and wickedly witty lyrics. Tonight enjoy a farewell dinner.  (B/D)

5.  Sunday, October 10
In the morning check out of the hotel and travel to Buffalo for lunch and a visit to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, which has a permanent collection of art from many centu¬ries, including paintings by French Impressionists.  You have a nonstop flight to New York’s  LaGuardia airport  (B/L)
