The Neuberger Museum of Art is pleased to announce its Art Trek of Contemporary Italy: Venice and Tuscany, September 24-October 2, 2005.  This trip will be led by two exceptional scholars and planned with an expert in Italian culture and art.  Participants will spend four nights in Venice and four nights in Florence, which will be the jumping off point for traveling throughout Tuscany. The trip’s itinerary includes exciting experiences and exclusive opportunities; you’ll see innovative contemporary art, outdoor sculpture, artists’ studios, private collections, and wine and dine with interesting hosts.

The price of the trip is $7,500 (single supplement $1,200), which includes a donation of $750 per person to the Friends of the Neuberger Museum of Art.  Included in the price are: deluxe hotel accommodations, admission to all itinerary venues, access to private collections, cocktail parties, and dining at the finest restaurants (except 2 independent dinners).  Airfare is not included.

Paul Blanchard, who is an artist, trip planner and author of the Blue Guide for Italy, has lent his expertise to help organize this phenomenal trip.  Dede Young, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art for the Neuberger Museum of Art, and Douglas Maxwell, a contemporary art scholar, will accompany the Neuberger group and lead discussions each day in the areas of their expertise.  The trip will focus on La Biennale di Venezia and contemporary art in the region.

An active visual artist as well as an art scholar, Paul Blanchard holds a Master of Arts in Art History from Syracuse University and his recent activities include organizing cultural travel for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Dallas Art Museum, the University of Chicago alumni, and Stanford University alumni, as well as training and consulting in fundraising and development to European museums, operas, and conservation organizations.

Douglas Maxwell has taught Contemporary Art Studies at NYU for 25 years.  He is an accomplished lecturer, critic, and curator.  Professor Maxwell is also a practicing psychoanalyst, which informs his insight into the language and practices of artists.

Dede Young has been the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art for the Neuberger since 2001. Among the exhibitions she has curated are April Gornik: Paintings and Drawings; Chuck Close Prints; Romare Bearden: Narrations; and Ursula von Rydingsvard: On an Epic Scale.

Paul, Dede, Douglas, and the Neuberger Museum of Art have worked with Carew Travel Consultants of Westport, CT, to design this trip.  Carew Travel has a distinguished list of clients that includes The Newark Museum, The High Museum of Art, and The Baltimore Museum of Art.  In addition, they were the travel agents for the Neuberger Museum’s 2003 Italy Art Trek, which received rave reviews from the participants.
